Position Summary

The Janitor is responsible for the cleanliness and upkeep of the Long Beach Red Shield Community Center.

Essential Functions

1. Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming.
2. Gather and empty wastebaskets.
3. Remove all donations from the front lobby before 8:00 am.
4. Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
5. Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
6. Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors, using soapy water, other cleaners, sponges, and squeegees.
7. Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
8. Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
9. Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
10. Clean and restore building interiors.
11. Clean facility thoroughly, such as glassware and metal fixtures, using solvents, brushes, rags, and power equipment.
12. Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
13. Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies.
14. Notify the Supervisor concerning the need for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
15. Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
16. Set up, arrange, and remove decorations, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffolding to prepare facilities for events, banquets, and programs.
17. Spray insecticides and fumigants to prevent insect and rodent infestation.
18. Responsible for various types of maintenance work assigned by the Facility Manager.
19. Use protective equipment when necessary and follow safety procedures.
20. Maintain and upkeep maintenance shop for inventories on parts, tools, and supplies.
21. Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Ability to walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist on an intermittent or sometimes continuous basis. Ability to grasp, push, pull objects such as files, file cabinet drawers, and reach overhead. Ability to operate computer, fax, and telephone. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. You may be asked on short notice to change shifts in order to provide full coverage. Holidays are worked according to set weekly/daily shifts.

Minimum Qualifications

1. At least two years of experience in a related field.
2. The ability to work independently yet function as part of a team is important.
3. Good oral and written communication skills.
4. Must demonstrate maturity in judgment and good crisis intervention skills.
5. High school diploma, equivalency degree, or demonstration of equivalent skills.
6. Demonstrated organizational skills and an ability to work with minimum supervision.
7. Must be amenable to the mission statement of The Salvation Army and function accordingly.
8. Must pass FBI/DOJ background check.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

1. Driving Test & clean MVR Check.
2. Able to train in and operate heavy machinery such as pallet jacks, scissor lifts, etc.
3. Working in the vicinity of children, a criminal background check is required with certification for Protect the Mission policies and procedures.
4. Must have good diagnostic skills and be able to perform minor building repairs.
5. Good time management and communication skills.
6. Positive attitude and willing to learn new skills.
7. Meet deadlines, work with attention to detail.
8. Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and clients, both oral and written. Set reasonable limits; react swiftly and intelligently in emergency situations.
9. Must be open to working evenings, weekends, and holidays.
10. Must have excellent organization and customer service.
11. Ability to handle multiple priorities and prioritize workloads.
