Job Description

The Managing Director (MD) will serve as the strategic leader of the organisation, driving its mission to empower young people through education, leadership development and civic engagement.

This role requires a visionary, ethical, and results-driven professional who can lead operations, foster stakeholder partnerships, and ensure financial sustainability and program effectiveness.

Roles and Responsibilities

Board and Corporate Governance

  • Responsible for leading the organisation in a manner that supports, guides and governs the organisation's mission as defined by the Board of Directors.
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.
  • Report to and work closely with the Board of Directors to seek their involvement in policy decisions, fundraising and increasing the overall visibility of the organisation.
  • Implement monitoring and control mechanisms that ensure compliance, both legislative and regulatory, and report to the Board of Directors quarterly on implementation and progress of measures.
  • Ensure quarterly reporting to the Board of Directors and stakeholders on programs and initiatives.

Strategic Leadership and Organisational Effectiveness

  • Develop and execute the organisation's long-term strategy to enhance youth empowerment and civic education.
  • Lead the implementation of an organisational structure that promotes operational efficiency, cross-functional collaboration and accountability.
  • Ensure that roles and responsibilities are clearly defined, with streamlined processes that enable the team to work cohesively toward shared goals. Regularly assess and refine the structure to adapt to evolving needs and challenges.
  • Drive strategic decision-making by leveraging data analytics, industry trends, and stakeholder feedback to refine programs, optimise resource allocation and ensure sustained impact.
  • Establish mechanisms for regular review and strategic recalibration to align with external shifts and emerging opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, inclusion and continuous learning within the organisation.

Financial Performance and Viability

  • Develop and oversee the annual budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility, alignment with organisational goals and long-term sustainability while maintaining control of operating expenses within budgeted limits and achieving financial targets.
  • Drive funding efforts through grants, corporate partnerships, donations and government initiatives, while driving innovative fundraising strategies to expand financial resources and support Engage's mission.
  • Optimise resource allocation and financial governance to maximise efficiency while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and ethical financial practices.
  • Maintain a contingency reserve fund equivalent to at least 2–3 months' operating expenses to mitigate risks associated with funding fluctuations and economic uncertainties.
  • Submit accurate monthly financial statements and an annual budget proposal to the Board, ensuring fiscal accountability and integrity.
  • Conduct annual financial audits and implement recommendations to strengthen financial oversight.
  • Develop long-term fiscal strategies to anticipate operational needs, funding shifts, and investment opportunities while maintaining a positive financial position through proactive fiscal management and resource optimisation.

Program Development and Impact

  • Oversee the design and implementation of youth development programs that align with educational, civic and social impact goals.
  • Ensure programs are evidence-based, measurable and scalable to maximise outreach and effectiveness.
  • Establish stringent monitoring and evaluation frameworks to assess impact and continuously improve initiatives.
  • Advocate for policy and systemic improvements that support youth empowerment and civic education, leveraging research insights and program outcomes to influence decision-makers and drive broader societal change.

Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy

  • Represent the organisation in high-level discussions with policymakers, educational institutions, funders and community leaders.
  • Strengthen relationships with corporate partners, educational institutions and nonprofit alliances to expand impact.
  • Advocate for youth development policies and civic education reforms at local, national and international levels.

People Leadership and Talent Development

  • Build and lead a high-performing, mission-driven team, fostering growth and engagement.
  • Implement HR strategies that enhance employee development, retention and well-being.
  • Promote ethical leadership, diversity and inclusion across the organisation.
  • Promote an inclusive culture of learning and leading by example.

Work Collaboratively

  • Build a culture of respect and understanding across the organisation.
  • Recognise outcomes which resulted from effective collaboration between teams.
  • Build cooperation and overcome barriers to information sharing, communication and collaboration across the organisation.
  • Facilitate opportunities to engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to develop joint solutions.

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Advanced degree in Public Administration, Nonprofit Management, Education, or Business Leadership or similar
  • Leadership experience in the non-profit sector and/or leading the transformation agenda within a corporate environment
  • Experience and commitment to serving communities through large scale initiatives and programs.
