Description
The City of Redding is accepting applications for the position of Scale House Attendant I to fill a full-time position in the Solid Waste division of the Public Works Department.
This recruitment will be merged with the existing Scale House Attendant I eligibility list from March 2025 and will be used to fill the current vacancy, as well as subsequent vacancies (City-wide) that occur during the life of the list.
We are looking for someone to
- Greet the general public and answer telephone calls.
- Provide accurate and consistent information to the public regarding facility policies, waste types and assessed fees.
- Estimate, collect and account for disposal fees and issue weight tickets.
- Learn and implement program policies and regulations.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, on the phone, and by radio with employees in the field both orally (on radio) and in writing.
- Follow opening and closing procedures for the scale houses, i.e. stock cash drawers and supplies, perform end of day close out, cash balancing, back up data base, etc.
- Data Entry.
- Payroll Entry.
- Prepare documents, i.e. over/short forms, change orders, z-out, bills of lading and other documents. Compile special reports.
- Performing other duties as assigned

Qualifications we're looking for- Knowledge of general office practices and procedures, cashiering procedures.
- Knowledge of operation of standard office machines.
- Knowledge of basic computer operation.
- Knowledge of basic math, English, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to demonstrate tact, courtesy, and cooperation in handling the public and all those with whom the employee comes into contact with in the performance of duties.
- Ability to perform data entry with a high degree of accuracy and speed.
Education and Experience: - Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
- Typical education would include a high school diploma, or equivalent.
- Typical experience would include one-year prior clerical or cashiering experience, coursework, or training.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.

Holidays: An average of thirteen and a half per year. Fire Association covered employees receive a payment in lieu of holidays. Holiday compensation for Redding Peace Officers Association and Redding Police Managers Association employees has been converted to base pay.
Vacation: Two weeks per year up to the fourth year of service, three weeks up to nine years of service, three and a half weeks up to fourteen years of service, four weeks up to nineteen years of service, four and a half weeks up to twenty-four years of service, five weeks after twenty-four years of service. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Part-time and temporary employees may be eligible for some vacation/paid time off benefits.
Sick Leave: Twelve working days of sick leave are accrued each year. Unused sick leave may be credited toward retirement. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU.
Health Insurance: Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life for employee and dependent, and long-term disability for employees.
Retirement: Full-time employees are covered by CalPERS (formula is dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS) and are not covered under the Social Security System
.
Administrative Leave: Management positions are eligible to receive 40 hours of administrative leave per calendar year as authorized by the department director; additional leave up to 40 hours may be granted by the City Manager.
Deferred Compensation Plans: Available for interested employees.
Union Dues: Some job classifications are represented by collective bargaining units, the employees of which may choose to join and pay union dues.
Part-Time Retirement Benefit Program: Part-time, seasonal, and full-time temporary employees either participate in the Social Security System or the PARS Alternate Retirement System depending upon bargaining unit assignment.
