ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Shasta County Fire Department's mission is to stand ready to protect life, property, and the environment utilizing our trained and equipped personnel. This includes structural and wild-land fire control, first response medical care, and assistance to other emergency service agencies.
We are a full-service fire department that serves both rural and urban areas throughout Shasta County. Our department is staffed by highly trained and experienced firefighters, paramedics, and other emergency responders who are committed to protecting the lives and property of our residents.
Managed under contract by the California Department of Forestry (CAL FIRE) with the assistance of 16 volunteer fire companies, we provide fire protection / prevention and emergency medical services to residents and visitors in a large portion of the county outside the incorporated cities and fire districts.
The 16 volunteer fire stations are supported by ten CAL FIRE stations throughout the county.
ABOUT THE POSITION
Under general supervision, to do storekeeping work in receiving, storing, issuing, and shipping of equipment, tools, parts, accessories and supplies; and to perform related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
During fire season and/or emergency incidents, the incumbent may be required to work extended hours and on weekends.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have at least one year's experience with local, state or federal government purchasing practices; a basic knowledge of the federal Incident Command System (ICS); experience or knowledge of ordering or handling household and office supplies as well as basic emergency medical supplies and equipment; a basic knowledge of firefighting equipment and personal protective equipment, and /or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for firefighting personal protective equipment; experience driving a large class C truck on rural roads, familiarity with navigating off highway and rural areas of Shasta County; one year experience driving a forklift; have experience developing and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of cooperators including vendors, state and federal employees and vendors; a willingness and interest in learning new skills and a wide range of topics related to firefighting; and experience in maintenance or repair of small equipment.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Checks equipment, tools, parts, accessories and supplies received against requisitions; issues and delivers tools, parts, accessories and supplies to shop employees; maintains and operates a perpetual computerized inventory system; takes physical inventories and keeps records of meter readings, equipment, fixed assets, tools, parts, accessories and supplies; operates various equipment including forklifts used in storekeeping work; maintains computerized inventory and repair-order records; segregates, store and purchases supplies and parts in bins and racks; packages and crates tools for shipment; keeps parts and supplies clean and the warehouse in a neat and orderly manner; answers telephone and radio calls to shop; assists with purchases of equipment and supplies following State and County policies and procedures; checks in all daily shipments; provides and assists County volunteers with structure and wildland safety gear, assists with safety gear for CDF personnel; maintains buildings and grounds around compound; assists staff with supplies and errands; provides miscellaneous support to employees and County volunteers; fills equipment and supply requests from fire stations; supervises County work release inmates and State inmates on a variety of jobs while on the compound; loads and unloads trucks; checks fuel levels and keeps fuel logs; assists with the support of emergency incidents supporting and maintaining supply lines between the incident, warehouse, and vendors; assists with returning incident base equipment to warehouse; serves as property custodian for State and Federal Excess property and equipment.
QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: A variety of parts, accessories, and equipment; routine clerical and purchasing records and procedures; storekeeping procedures, including stock ordering, receiving and issuing; perpetual inventory procedures using a computerized system.
Ability to: Use and interpret manufacturers' catalogs and parts list; prepare requisitions for tools, parts, accessories, and supplies; pack and crate heavy articles for shipment; keep necessary manual and computer records; understand and carry out oral and written directions; maintain cooperative relationships with others; and operate a personal computer and a forklift.
MINUMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of experience in a parts storeroom or as a parts counterman involving extensive ordering, inventory, and related record keeping duties.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid California driver's license.
An incumbent must obtain certification to operate a forklift within six (6) months from the date of hire.

THESE BENEFITS DO NOT APPLY TO EXTRA HELP EMPLOYEES Holidays: - 12 paid holidays (96 hours) per year.
- 1 Floating holiday annually.
Vacation: - 10 working days a year during the first three years of service.
- 15 working days a year - 4 through 9 years of service.
- 17 working days a year - 10 through 15 years of service.
- 20 working days a year - 16 or more years of service.
Note - accrued vacation leave may not be used until after three months of employment. For purposes of vacation accrual, a working day does not include overtime.
Employees may elect to receive a payment for Vacation hours (in lieu of use) for up to eighty hours - in five whole hour increments - of accrued vacation. *Subject to criteria as outlined in Section 13.8C of the Trades & Craft MOU.
Sick Leave: - 96 hours of sick leave are earned each year with no maximum accrual.
- Employees terminating in good standing after completion of 5 years of continuous service will receive a pro-rata payoff of accumulated sick leave.
- Unused sick leave may be converted to PERS service credit upon retirement.
Note - accrued sick leave may be used immediately as accrued. Accrued paid leave benefits are used in conjunction with FMLA/CFRA as appropriate.
*Vacation and Sick Leave accruals are based on regularly scheduled working hours. Additional time will not be accrued on hours worked over 80 hours within a one pay period.Bereavement: - 24 hours paid leave for each non-concurrent death in the immediate family.
Health Plan:Employees in the Teamsters bargaining unit are insured through a Teamsters Trust plan.
Depending on the plan selected, the County pays most, or all, of the employee premium, and contributes a portion of the dependent premium.
Contributions are made for a portion of a retiree's insurance premium.
Dental Plan:The County pays a portion of the employee's and dependents' premium for dental insurance.
Vision Plan:The County pays the employee premium and employees may enroll dependents at their own expense.
Life Insurance:The County pays the premium for life insurance for most employees. The amount of coverage varies by bargaining unit. For Trades & Crafts employees the current coverage amount is $25,000.
Additional Life insurance is available to purchase through Aflac and The Standard.
Retirement:The County is in the Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) coordinated with Social Security.
- Members hired prior to May 8, 2011 are covered under the retirement formula of 2% @ 55 benefit.
- Members hired after May 8, 2011 but before January 1, 2013 are covered under the retirement formula of 2% @ 60 benefit.
- Members hired after January 1, 2013 are covered under the California Public Employees Pension Reform Act (PEPRA) with a benefit formula of 2% @ 62.
Please review the specific MOU for stipulated retirement formulas.
Employees pay 9.5% of his or her salary, on a pre-tax basis for a period of time as specified in his or her labor contract, or Personnel Rules as appropriate. Members hired prior to 2013 may have a different contribution percentage.
