Position Summary

NOTE: This position may be located in Greenville or Columbia, South Carolina. The selected candidate will be expected to travel anywhere from 15% of his or her time per month to various locations within South Carolina and Charlotte, NC.

The SC Energy Policy Director will be responsible for providing leadership, advocacy and advice in the effectuation of state energy policy for Duke Energy with regard to matters associated with the South Carolina Energy Security Act, with a particular emphasis on energy storage and battery storage procurement. Responsibilities include:

• Identifying and analyzing energy policy, development, interconnection and procurement trends including pertaining to, but not limited to, energy storage, including issues and risks which may significantly impact the corporation and its customers, in coordination with multiple departments across the enterprise, and to help develop and execute strategic action plans to effectively manage these issues while addressing the needs of the utility and its customers;
• Supporting support cross functional efforts for Act -related matters that include, but are not limited to, rate setting, reporting, resource planning, and development of communications and deliverables for the South Carolina President's organization, and providing meaningful contributions and leadership for project management and filings with the Public Service Commission;
• Tracking industry and regulatory issues related to energy storage, battery procurement and other matters related to the Act. This position is also expected to be able to support meetings with, and inquiries from, the Office of Regulatory Staff, as well as site visits, hearings and stakeholder meetings for Act-related matters, with a particular emphasis on storage and battery procurement.
• Building and maintaining positive relationships with key external stakeholders that impact regulatory outcomes and working collaboratively across the corporation to develop employee engagement strategies to ensure Duke Energy is appropriately informed about policy activity within the state of South Carolina as well as national policy activity which could affect customers and the Company's operations within the State;
• Working closely with Company experts on storage but also on environmental, operational, regulatory, legal, legislative, nuclear, grid, electric transportation, renewables, federal matters and other similar topics necessary to serve customers in line with the requirements of the Act.
• Representing the company and ensuring appropriate representation, as needed, in internal and external energy stakeholder organizations, regulatory matters, advocacy efforts and educational opportunities (e.g., utility policy committees, steering committees, etc.); and
• Supporting the Vice President, Regulatory Affairs and Policy, SC in the development and implementation of department business plans and budget.

The State Energy Policy, Director, SC must demonstrate a high level of critical/strategic thinking to resolve high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems with a special emphasis on collaboration and project management in a fast-paced environment.

Demonstrated leadership, self-starter, communication, and interpersonal skills required. Must possess a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and influence internally with the company and industry peers under tight deadlines as well as be able to provide information, as appropriate, to agency and government officials, industry participants and customers.

Responsibilities

• Managing solicitation of storage and implementation of storage related policies as required by the Act, including contract strategy development, stakeholder communication management, project portfolio oversight, interconnection strategy related to storage, and providing cross-functional team leadership, and participation in regulatory dockets including testifying before state agencies.
• Identifying and analyzing energy policy trends and regulatory developments including issues and risks which may significantly impact the corporation and its customers, in coordination with multiple departments across the enterprise, and to help develop and execute strategic action plans to effectively manage these issues while addressing the needs of South Carolina as well as the company's interests and operations serving customers in South Carolina.
• Building and maintaining positive relationships with key external stakeholders that impact regulatory outcomes and working collaboratively across the corporation to develop employee engagement strategies to ensure Duke Energy is appropriately informed about policy activity within the state of South Carolina as well as national policy activity which could affect customers and the Company's operations within the State.
• Representing the company and ensuring appropriate representation, as needed, in internal and external energy stakeholder organizations, advocacy efforts and educational opportunities (e.g., utility policy committees, regulatory proceedings, steering committees, etc.);
• Creating work product, presentations and policy papers sufficient to engage and inform Company management of activities in or affecting South Carolina related to the Energy Security Act and driving internal collaboration for successful outcomes for the corporation and its customers.

Basic/Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Accounting, Business Administration, Sustainability Management, Natural Resources or other related degree AND seven (7) years minimum required related experience

Preferred Qualifications

• Master's degree in Business Administration or Engineering
• Doctorate in Public Law
• 10 years minimum related work experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Significant background in utilities, land management, energy, or contract administration.
• The position must demonstrate a high level of critical/strategic thinking to resolve high impact, complex and/or cross-functional problems.
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills required.
• Must possess a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and influence internally with the company and industry peers as well as externally with government officials and policymakers.

Working Conditions

• Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility
• This position will be located primarily in an office environment, but travel to various locations is anticipated.
• 3 days in office
