Are you a parent, teacher, or college student seeking seasonal summer employment? Redding Recreation is looking for Summer Coordinators! Primary responsibilities for this role entail planning and organizing Summer recreation programming for kids ages 5-12 and supervising part-time Recreation staff as they implement your summer schedule of fun.

Good leadership skills and an understanding of child development is vital to this role as you will be the mastermind behind the summer shenanigans and head honcho in charge of Summer Counselors. The 2026 Summer of Fun is yours to command!

We are looking for someone to

  1. Plan and coordinate program activities; supervise program staff and/or volunteers; review applications for available positions; and evaluate and make recommendations regarding program and staff to Recreation Supervisor.
  2. Assist in the organization, implementation and supervision of special events, swim lessons, concessions, etc., or age-specific programs such as preschool programs.
  3. Assist in the organization, implementation and supervision of special events or programs, coordinate volunteer efforts of organizations involved in special events or programs, supervise registration, and communicate program development with Recreation Supervisor.
  4. Interpret recreation division policy, goals and programs for neighborhood groups and organizations.
  5. Assist in the organization, implementation and supervision of a community or neighborhood recreation center, including on-site staff supervision, inventory of materials and supplies, and communication of facility needs to supervisor.
  6. Manage the on-site operation of a City recreation facility. Maintain staff schedules, provide necessary training, work effectively with participants, organize and supervise all activities and programs, maintain accurate records, and handle all emergency situations in compliance with City policy and procedures.
  7. Design and produce program catalog describing services, programs and classes offered by Recreation division. Establishes production schedule and time line. Writes text and designs inside and back covers. Secures current photographs. Proofreads product prior to print.
  8. Act as primary staff on the design and update of division's website.
  9. Seeks out financial sponsors to assist in providing recreation programs or events.
  10. Participate in media relations activities, which may include: responding to routine inquiries; drafting, editing and distributing news releases; alerting the media of photo opportunities; identifying and communicating newsworthy stories; and/or performing other related activities.
  11. Employ word processing, graphic editing, database, AS400 registration interface and other software applications.
  12. Assist residents in registering for recreational programs. Provide back-up support to front office operations.
  13. Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications we're looking for

  • Knowledge of principles, practices and techniques used in marketing and public relations activities
  • Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees
  • Ability to promote and administer recreation activities
  • Ability to understand written and oral instructions
  • Ability to maintain an effective working relationship with participants, associates, and volunteers
  • Ability to conduct recreation events
  • Ability to maintain and update department web page
  • Ability to develop marketing and communication materials
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple projects.
Education, Experience and Special Requirements:
  • Typical education would include a high school diploma or equivalent, or any combination of experience and education that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Business administration, marketing and communications classes desirable.
  • Typical experience would be equivalent of two years relevant program area and/or supervisory experience. Supervisory experience desirable.
  • Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.
  • Must possess valid First Aid and CPR certifications and same certifications required by employees supervised.
  • Riverwalk Grille Coordinator must possess a Food Safety Handling certification.
  • Marketing Coordinator must be proficient in Photoshop or equivalent software and HTML web design.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:
  • Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check
  • Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test.


Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.

Holidays:
An average of thirteen and a half per year. Fire Association covered employees receive a payment in lieu of holidays. Holiday compensation for Redding Peace Officers Association and Redding Police Managers Association employees has been converted to base pay.

Vacation:
Two weeks per year up to the fourth year of service, three weeks up to nine years of service, three and a half weeks up to fourteen years of service, four weeks up to nineteen years of service, four and a half weeks up to twenty-four years of service, five weeks after twenty-four years of service. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Part-time and temporary employees may be eligible for some vacation/paid time off benefits.

Sick Leave:
Twelve working days of sick leave are accrued each year. Unused sick leave may be credited toward retirement. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU.

Health Insurance:
Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life for employee and dependent, and long-term disability for employees.

Retirement:
Full-time employees are covered by CalPERS (formula is dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS) and are not covered under the Social Security System.

Administrative Leave:

Management positions are eligible to receive 40 hours of administrative leave per calendar year as authorized by the department director; additional leave up to 40 hours may be granted by the City Manager.

Deferred Compensation Plans:
Available for interested employees.
Union Dues: Job classifications in the unrepresented group do not pay union dues.
Part-Time Retirement Benefit Program:
Part-time, seasonal, and full-time temporary employees either participate in the Social Security System or the PARS Alternate Retirement System depending upon bargaining unit assignment.

SDI:
Unrepresented positions do not participate in SDI.
