Job Objective:
Analyzes clinical cancer information and independently completes patient abstracts in accordance with all national requirements set by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and the California Cancer Registry.

Job Description:
Education:
Required: High school diploma, GED or higher level degree; College level Anatomy, Physiology, Medical Terminology Courses
Preferred: Associate's degree in Allied Health Field

Licensure/Certification:
Required: Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) certification

Experience:
Preferred: Experience in a Cancer Registry

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Ability to positively interface with other departments, medical offices, physicians and agencies, Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and other relevant software applications, Excellent working knowledge of Medical terminology, anatomy & physiology and related health sciences, Knowledge of software systems including: IkeNet, IKEMD, Horizon Patient Folder(HPF), SEER Rx and Accurint, Proficient knowledge of the cancer disease process as related to diagnosis, treatments, extent of disease, staging, and disease progression, Team player that is able to work independently with strong organizational skills and effectively multi-task, Working knowledge of standards and requirements of American College of Surgeons standards (ACoS) Commission on Cancer; Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER), International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O);American Joint Commission on Cancer (AJCC) staging, Collaborative Staging, Multiple Primary Histology Coding (MPH); Solid Tumor Rules; Hematopoietic Manual and Database; and California Cancer Registry Standards, Written and verbal communication skills

Essential Responsibilities
1.Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
2.Abstracts non-analytic and analytic cancer cases, recording complete treatment information according to the ACOS Commission on Cancer and California Cancer Registry guidelines.
3.Coordinates Main/Specialty/UCSD Shared Tumor Boards as set forth in the Cancer Registry Policy and Procedures including: Develops and distributes physician schedule for case presentations for assigned tumor board and finds replacements for physician cancellations as needed, Sends Tumor Board notifications to physicians and departments, Collects cases to be presented at tumor board from physicians, Locates patient information from attending physicians offices, outside laboratories, other hospitals, free standing radiology offices, etc. Request slides and scans/films as needed, Notifies pathology and radiology departments of all cases and outside treatment information, Notifies Annenberg Center of cases and presenting physicians to allow for CE availability, Sets up AV equipment, coordinate catering, distribute case information as needed, Records all treatment data on cases and recommendations from Tumor Board, Enters all statistical information in Excel, maintain current statistics as required by the ACOS Commission on Cancer standards
4.Collects TNM Staging data on all eligible cases as required by the Commission on Cancer: Reviews record to locate TNM & Stage Group as recorded by the managing physician, Prepares TNM for incomplete patient records and submits through Epic for physician signature and documents in patient abstract, Updates abstract upon completion of TNM and Stage group, Assists with TNM Staging Audits to identify incomplete records and reassign to physicians for completion, Records Staging Audit Summary and updates Cancer Committee at least annually
5.Audits physician treatment requests, entering returned patient information and resubmitting delinquent requests as needed.
6.Assists with training of Cancer Registrar I in Cancer Registry procedures.
7.Provides assistance with Annual Report, data utilization reports, special studies as needed.
8.Supports Cancer Committee and promotes ACOS Commission on Cancer Approved Cancer Program Standards through quality registry operations.
9.Follows patient confidentiality guidelines and regulations (HIPAA).
10.Assists with data submission to the State of California and the National Cancer Data Base.
11.Performs other duties as assigned.
