The Educational Sign Language Interpreter provides interpreting and support services to hard of hearing and deaf students. The Educational Sign Language Interpreter’s primary function is to facilitate communication and education among hard of hearing and deaf students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: [May include, but not limited to the following.]
1. Provide sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting.
2. Assist students in academic subjects such as reading, writing and math; work effectively with students in classrooms and assist them in vocational and/or living skills.
3. Provide tutoring and/or note taking and other support services (such as photocopying, typing, record keeping, etc.) when necessary.
4. Monitor students during classroom, outdoor or community activities.
5. Correct homework and in class assignments.
6. Assist in maintaining records and charts on individual students. (Examples: attendance records, lunch count, daily charting, grades, test scores and progress of student learning.)
7. Provide interpreting for extracurricular activities and parent meetings when necessary (such as back to school night, graduation, etc.)
8. Provide, under the direction of supervising teacher, orientations to deafness and/or proper use of interpreting services to hearing students and staff and other inservice training as needed.
9. Meet and confer with the supervising teacher on a regular basis.
10. Perform other related duties as determined by supervisor.
1. American Sign Language or other sign system required by the student.
2. Methods and techniques used in communicating with deaf and hard of hearing persons.
3. Technical signs and/or vocabulary used in classes to which assigned.
4. Code of Ethics prepared by the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf.
5. Confidentiality standards in the educational setting (differs from strict confidentiality in that the student’s health and welfare are of the utmost importance and any information that could be detrimental to the student, other students or the school will be reported to appropriate personnel).
1. Successfully pass the Interpreter evaluation examination.
2. Hear spoken language communication.
3. Interpret spoken English at a rate appropriate to the assignment.
4. Vocally express for deaf and hard of hearing signers.
5. Interpret or transliterate for a group of deaf and hard of hearing persons.
6. Understand and use proper English, including vocabulary and grammar.
7. Spontaneously interpret in technical and complex subject matter.
8. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally an in writing.
9. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the work place.
10. Patiently and effectively work with students of differing backgrounds.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
1. Must possess 48 semester units from an accredited college or university; or 2) Associate’s degree or higher; or 3) CBEST (Plus passage of CODESP Instructional Component); or 4) Passage of a Butte County Office of Education approved comprehensive Local Assessment Test (CODESP); or 5) Passage of another district approved Local Assessment Test.
2.– Certification by the National Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf, or have achieved a score of 4.0 or above on the EIPA, the ESSE-I/R, or the NAD/ACCI assessment.
A.A. degree in Interpreting for the Deaf; or A.A. degree in a college level Interpreter Training program; or native signer with documented experience and references.
